Introduction. The aim of the study was to show the relationship between food preferences of high school students in relation to dietary recommendations and the locus of health control and self-efficacy.
Material and methods. The research was carried out in a group of 152 students of high schools in Krakow. The following questionnaires were used: FFQ-6 (frequency of consumption), MHLC (Location of Health Locus of Control – HLOC), Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale – GSES). Significance of differences was checked with the Mann-Whitney U test.
Results. People with a high sense of self-efficacy and an internal locus of health control significantly more often consume wholegrain cereal products, margarines, dairy products, vegetables and fruits in their diet. The location of HLOC and the level of self-efficacy did not affect the frequency of consumption of meat and meat products and fish. However, taking into account the gender of the respondents indicated such differences. Women significantly less often eat meat and meat products as well as animal fats, margarines, mayonnaise and dressings. They also consume sweetened breakfast cereals less frequently.
Conclusions. Nutritional choices made by people with an internal locus of health control and strong self-efficacy are closer to the principles of rational nutrition.
